The NJC volleyball team won't officially take the court until January, but off the court, their players are still achieving great things.

Olivia Himmel, a sophomore from Ault, CO, has been appointed to the NJCAA Student-Athlete Council. Himmel is one of two student-athletes from Region IX to be selected to the Council.

"The council, utilized to promote effective communication between the regional and national administration and the student-athlete population, will continually work to provide a transparent experience for student-athletes nationwide," read a statement from Bryson Collins, Coordinator of Special Projects and Esports, and the National Office Liaison to the SAC at the NJCAA National Office.

According to Collins, additional responsibilities of the council include:

  • Provide the student-athletes with an opportunity to have input into the educational and personal development programs that serve the needs of today's student-athletes.
  • Throughout the upcoming academic and athletic year, the council will use their experiences as student-athletes at the two-year level to provide a voice to all NJCAA student-athletes.
  • Council members will also be able to provide thoughts and opinions on current and proposed legislation while using their experiences to provide feedback and recommendations.
  • Along with their service to the council, council members will have the opportunity to engage and participate at institutional, regional, and national levels.
  • Also, the council will be used to add additional duties as they see fit to the aforementioned list that will continually shape this experience to ensure the success of the committee.

Himmel couldn't be reached for comment, but her head coach Kenzie Chrisman was quite excited Himmel's selection.

"When (NJC Athletic Director) Marci (Henry) approached me wanting to nominate Olivia I was thrilled," she said. "She has stepped into the captain role for us this year and has done a amazing job. People are willing to listen to her and I think that goes to show the type of person Olivia is. This is such a big honor and I think she's going to do an amazing job representing our program and NJC as a whole."
