Plainsmen Lose Two In Central Wyoming Tournament

Riverton, Wyo...

The NJC Plainsmen basketball team headed up to Wyoming this past weekend to play in the Central Wyoming tournament that featured different teams from the North division of the region.  On Friday the 12th, Northeastern faced Northwest College out of Powell, Wyoming and then on Saturday the 13th played host college Central Wyoming.  Saturday's game ended in a nail bitter as it went to overtime, with Central making a basket for the lead with just a couple seconds left.  The Plainsmen will head home for a game against Laramie County Community College on Monday, November 15th and then travel for the rest of the semester to various locations and tournaments.

(Game Recap 11/12) Plainsmen vs. Northwest College = Loss 89-80

1st Half - NJC struggled to stay on point with the Trappers on the points scored.  Northwest had a couple of scoring runs that dug NJC a deficit.  Score at halftime was 46-37 in favor of the Trappers.

2nd Half - More of an even half for both teams.  Northeastern was unable to get some key stops and wasn't able to make back the points.  Final score was 89-80 Northwest College.

Breakdown: NJC had a fairly rounded scoring effort by its players.  Freshman Keynion Clark led the way for the Plainsmen with a perfect shooting performance at 10-10 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line.  He ended the game with 22 points and 6 rebounds.  Freshman Obi Agbim also has stepped up his playing time and performances as he tallied 18 points in his starting 5 role.  Donta Dawson also added 10 points in his starting role.  Overall, NJC shot 48.3% from the field but unfortaunately a very poor 8.3% from behind the arc.  The Plainsmen were a little more careless with the ball as they had 17 turnovers to the Trappers 12.

(Game Recap 11/13) Plainsmen vs. Central Wyoming College = Loss 96-94 in OT

1st Half - NJC played a strong first half on both sides of the ball containing the CWC offense.  Halftime score was 39-37 in favor of the Plainsmen.

2nd Half - Northeastern was able to keep the turnovers to a minumum all game but let CWC player Jesse White score at will against NJC, allowing him to score a total of 37.  Game time ended with a tie at 80.

OT - Scoring again went back and forth between the two teams.  NJC needed to make a couple of big defensive stops and just couldn't make it happen as CWC at the end scored a bucket with only a couple seconds left.  Game ended 96-64 CWC.

Breakdown: A tough loss for the Plainsmen as it was a hard fought battle on the road.  Central Wyoming's starting 5 made up the bulk of the scoring as their bench didn't contribute much.  Sophomore Axel Henry came off the bench to lead NJC in scoring with 20 points.  Four of the five starters for Northeastern finished with double digit score totals.  Obi Agbim, Jared Adams and Quincey Jewett combined for 45 points.  Each team ended with 44 rebounds.  Northeastern shot very well from behind the arc at 46.2% and 40% overall from the field.
