NJC golf returns to action with strong showing at Wyoming Event

When the NJCAA announced in July that the majority of fall sports would be pushed to the spring semester, it brought a great deal of disappointment to fans, athletes, and coaches of Northeastern Junior College. It meant volleyball would be moving to January, along with men's basketball, women's basketball, and nearly everything else.

That said, there was one sport at NJC that was not moved to the spring semester: Golf. Head coach Vernon Harbart's squad was back in action on Friday for both men and women and they reminded Logan County that the Plainsmen are still competing in one sport.

The Plainsmen took part in the Eastern Wyo. Event on Friday, September 11th in Torrington, WY. The weather was in the low 50's with rain on and off throughout the event. Still, for NJC it was their first golf action in roughly a year. That fact alone made it all worthwhile.

Ultimately, the NJC finished the tournament in 4th place, finishing +49 for a total score of 337. The women came in 2nd at +144 for a score of 432.

Individually, Nick Dinapoli led the way for the Plainsmen. Dinapoli finished the day tied for 13th at +7 for a score of 79.

Notable for fans of Sterling High School, Friday marked the debut of NJC freshman Chase Hume. Hume was an outstanding golfer for the Tigers throughout his prep career and he began his college career with a bang. Hume tied for 22nd place at the tournament at +13 for a score of 85.

Hume wasn't alone at 22nd place, however. Fellow NJC golfer Ty Murray finished the day tied with Hume with an equal score of 85 at +13 as well.

Arnold Phillip was right behind the duo of Hume and Murray for the Plainsmen. Phillip finished the day tied for 26th at +16 for a score of 88.

Right behind Phillip was yet another Plainsmen golfer as Conner Weller finished +17 for a core of 89. That was good enough to tie Weller for 28th place.

Houston Irwin rounded out the men's group. Irwin finished 33rd at +23 for a score of 95.

It was a good start to the season for NJC. They'll look to keep that momentum going in McCook, Nebraska on Friday, September 18th.
