Plainsmen Tame Mavericks

Plainsmen Tame Mavericks

Aug. 31, 2018, Sterling, Colo. – The Plainsmen soccer team traveled to Goodland, Kan. to play against the Northwest Kansas Tech Mavericks in a regular season game. Northeastern had just come off a recent blowout victory over the Colorado Northwestern Spartans, and were looking to keep things rolling into this game.

The game began with both teams trying to feel each other out, but it wasn't before long when Jean Carre broke the ice and scored the first goal for the Plainsmen in the 22nd minute of play. Carre took advantage of a poor pass by the Mavs, and vollied it over the goalkeeper for a score. Not too long after his first goal, he buried another one home as Plainsmen goalie Luc Deniesselle would give a long ball to Paul Calliari, who would head it to Carre to make a 1-v01 move against the Mavs goalie and give the Plainsmen the 2-0 lead. Carre would stay hot in the 35th minute and earn a hat trick as Gaetan Garcia got the assist. No more than four minutes after that, the freshman Quentin Hornung wanted to get in on the action and scored a goal as Dani van Steijn got the assist. The half ended with the Plainsmen leading the Mavericks 4-0.

In the second half, the Plainsmen played more reserved and kept their lead at 4-0 until the end of the game where they won with a shutout.

The Plainsmen will travel to Iowa next to play against Iowa Central and Iowa Western Community College over the long weekend before returning home to play Region IX opponent, the Western Nebraska Cougars on Sept. 12.
