Van Steijn Gets Game Winner in Double Overtime

Sept. 14, 2018, Sterling, Colo.— Overtime games have been the norm for the Plainsmen soccer team as of late. From their last six games, four of have gone into overtime, resulting in two wins, one tie and one loss. With that experience in overtime, the Plainsmen had the upper hand against the Western Wyoming Mustangs.

The game began with Jean Carre breaking the ice in the 6th minute by scoring from the passes of Zak Khouiel and Quentin Hornung. That goal set the tone for the first half, as the game had a quick tempo. That tempo set by the Plainsmen dropped for a slight minute towards the end of the half, and the Mustangs took advantage and scored the equalizer in the 42nd minute.

The second half was a battle with each team having opportunities, but each defense squashed anything noteworthy. At the end of regular time, the game remained a 1-1 tie. In the first overtime, both teams again battled for the victory, but each came up short. In the second and final overtime, the Plainsmen caught a break as Dani van Steijn pounded one in the back of the goal, giving Northeastern the 2-1 win.

In all their games so far this year, the Plainsmen have scored a goal, never falling to a shutout. Also in the last four games, Dani van Steijn and Jean Carre have added a goal in at least one of those games. The final game stat would go to Heart Mwalimo, who gained his first collegiate win as a goalkeeper.
