Opening Weekend Split for Plainswomen

Opening Weekend Split for Plainswomen

Feb. 5, 2019, Sterling, Colo. —   Whether it is hunting season or softball season, opening day is an exciting time of the year. For the Plainswomen softball team, it is what they have been practicing for since they arrived on campus. The ladies began their season with a road trip down to Texas to play against Clarendon College and Pratt Community College.

The first two games against Clarendon didn't go as Northeastern had planned. The first game against the Bulldogs began with Clarendon going up 2-0 in the first. In the third, Northeastern cut their lead in half by scoring one, but the Bulldogs matched that run with one of their own. Northeastern then gave up one more run to Clarendon in the fourth to make it a 4-1 game. Neither team scored the rest of the game, and Northeastern lost 4-1. The second game was rough for the Plainswomen as the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before Northeastern was able to score. The third inning showed how Northeastern could play offensively as they came back to make it a 5-4 game. The next two innings is where they struggled by giving up 11 runs, resulting in the 16-4 loss.

Day two was a different day and different competition as they played the Pratt Beavers. A few innings against Clarendon showed the ladies that they had potential to make runs, they just needed to put together a full game. With that in mind, Northeastern jumped out to a 10-1 in their first game before Pratt made it a 10-3 game in the third. The Beavers scored a few more runs, but the Plainswomen kept them at bay and won 11-7. Their second game was filled with high scoring innings by both teams. Pratt came out swinging and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first. Northeastern countered with eight runs in the second to take the 8-5 lead. The third inning was a null as both teams put up five runs each. The rest of the game had great defense by both teams, and it ended with Northeastern being victorious 13-10.

The Plainswomen will head back south on Feb. 9-10 as they travel to play Luna Community College to play two double headers against the Rough Riders.
