Softball Wins Three in New Mexico

Feb. 11, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — The Plainswomen softball team was eager to get out of the snow and get to a place where they could play ball. Their destination was Las Vegas, N.M. where they played four games against Luna Community College. The previous weekend in Texas, the ladies split by winning two of the four games. Northeastern knew they could do better than a weekend split against Luna, as long as they kept their bats hot. 

In the first game, the Plainswomen fell behind early, but were able to bring it back in the fourth inning to lead 9-4. In the sixth, the Plainswomen tacked four more runs on, but the Rough Riders batted in six runs to take the 14-13 lead. Northeastern settled down and matched that six with six of their own to cap off the win 19-14. The second game of the day was less than ideal as the ladies started strong with three runs in the top of the first. Despite taking an early lead, that was all the runs they scored and lost 8-3. 

A new day meant a fresh start for the Plainswomen as they prepared for two more games. Northeastern began the game solid by scoring one run in the first and third innings. Luna took over the lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Northeastern scored six more in the next two innings to take the 8-3 lead.  In the bottom of seven, the Rough Riders managed to get three runs back, but not before the Plainswomen retired the side and won 8-6. The last game of the day was a hitting clinic for Northeastern as they jumped out to a 13-1 lead after two innings. Luna score eight runs in the third and fourth innings to bring it to a 13-9 ballgame. The Plainswomen had more left in the tank and scored two more runs in the top of the sixth, which would be the last runs of the game. Northeastern went on to win the game 15-9 and go 3-1 in the series. 

The Plainswomen will open their home series against Colorado Northwestern on Friday, Feb. 15 with first pitch at noon.
