Softball Goes 2-2 on the Weekend

Apr. 23, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — In their final weekend home series, the Northeastern softball team hosted the Lamar Lopes on Friday and the McCook Indians on Saturday. Despite not being able to make the playoffs, the Plainswomen played four hard-fought games.

The first series against the Lopes was frustrating as the Plainswomen led the majority of both games, but Lamar was able to make late runs and win. In the first game, Northeastern held the 4-0 lead going into the top of the fifth. Lamar scored two in the fifth with the Plainswomen scoring one. With the score reading 5-2, Lamar scored five unanswered runs, giving them the 7-5 victory.

Game two was another frustrating loss for the Plainswomen as they began the game leading 2-0. Northeastern kept the Lopes scoreless until the fourth when they broke the ice to make it a 2-1 game. The fifth inning was when Lamar took the lead by scoring the final two runs of the game. Those runs allowed the Lopes to edge out Northeastern 3-2. Northeastern lost the overall series to Lamar by only winning two of the six games.

In the next series against McCook, the Plainswomen turned up the heat and won both games against the Indians. Northeastern was able to put up two crooked numbers in the first and second innings to lead 8-2. The ladies were able to get one more run in the fourth and hold McCook defensively and won 9-6.

The final game of the series was their best yet as they jumped out to an early  9-1 lead. Despite not scoring any additional runs throughout the game, the Plainswomen's energy carried to the defensive side and kept the Indians at bay, winning 9-5. Although winning the final two games at home was important, McCook won the overall series 4-2.

Northeastern continues games as they travel to play Western Nebraska on Apr. 23 and North Platte on Apr. 24.
