Softball Sweeps Home Opener

The NJC softball team hosted their first games of the season this past weekend as the Plainswomen took on Colby Community College at Mason Field.  As the season is fully under way, Northeastern also traveled to Kansas to play a couple of out of conference teams that gives NJC a different look at some of the softball being played in other areas of the region.  Now sitting at 4-7 on the season, Northeastern will again travel out of state to compete against Northwest Kansas Tech College on Friday the 18th as well as Colby Community College on Saturday the 19th.  The Plainswomen will have a double header against each team with 1st pitches being thrown at 1pm & 3pm Friday and 2pm & 4pm on Saturday.

(Game Recap 2/12) Plainswomen vs. Colby Community College = Won 15-7

Breakdown: Game called in 6 innings.  Northeastern got off to a hot start as they found themselves with a 11-3 lead after 3 innings, and finishing the game with 15.  Sara Lynch got the start on the mound as she pitched 5 solid innings, giving up 9 hits, 3 earned runs and striking out 2.  The bats were swining big for NJC as three women homered in the contest.  Desiree Perales went 4-5 from the plate with a dominating homerun and 6 RBI's.  Sterling local Rylyn Nelson also stepped up big with a yardball and 4 RBI's.  The Plainswomen out hit Colby CC 16-11 in the home win.

(Game Recap 2/12) Plainswomen vs. Colby Community College = Won 14-4

Breakdown: Game called in 5 innings.  NJC had a monster 2nd inning putting up 7 runs, extending their lead to 9-3 after 2.  Another big 4th inning helped boost the Plainswomen to an early game win.  Avery Fox took the mound for NJC and pitched 4 innings.  She gave up 7 hits but only 3 earned runs.  Cora Aguirres swung the bat hot adding a homer and 3 RBI's to her game stat sheet.  Jacquelynn Siefken was perfect from the plate going 3-3.  4 NJC girls had at least 2 RBI's or more in the win.  Northeastern recorded 14 hits with only 2 strikeouts.

(Game Recap 2/13) Plainswomen vs. Garden City CC = Loss 13-12

Breakdown: The 4th inning proved to be a wild one as both teams combined for 14 runs.  The 2nd half of the game was pretty close knit, but NJC gave up some early runs and couldn't overcome the deficit.  Desiree Perales agains came up big at the plate as she went 3-5 with a homer and 2 RBI's.  Mia Glover also came through at the plate going 2-4 with a yardball and 2 RBI's.  5 different Plainswomen had 2 RBI's in what was a pretty solid day batting, but just came up short.  Sara Lynch pitched 3.2 innings giving up 10 hits and 4 earned runs.  NJC was out hit in the game 17-16.

(Game Recap 2/13) Plainswomen vs. Garden City CC = Loss 20-15

Breakdown: Both Garden City and Northeastern had one big inning scoring in the first 3 of the game.  Garden City put up 9 in the 1st and NJC put up 7 in the 3rd.  Garden City ended up with a couple big innings to finish the game.  Avery Fox struggled on the mound as she only pitched in 2/3's of an inning, giving up 7 hits and 5 earned runs.  Michaela Moorehouse came in and took over the reins for 5.1 innings, giving up 11 hits and 6 earned runs.  Katey Kelly for Northeastern had herself a day going 3-5 from the plate with a homerun, double and 6 RBI's.  Jacquelynn Siefken swung a big at as well going 4-5 with two doubles and 3 RBI's.  Rylyn Nelson again went yardball and had 2 RBI's.  An early game grand slam for Garden City helped solidify their win.

(Game Recap 2/14) Plainswomen vs. Seward County CC = Loss 20-15

Breakdown: NJC started the game off with hot bats as they were up 11-9 after 3 innings.  The 5th and 6th innings both were too much for Northeastern to handle as they gave up 5 runs in each, which sealed the loss.  Avery Fox and Sara Lynch shared some of the pitching duties, but each gave up 5 earned runs in the game.  4 different girls put up at least 2 RBI's for the Plainswomen.  Jacquelynn Siefken stayed hot at the plate going 4-4 in the contest with a double and 5 RBI's.  Mia Glover also knocked in 3 RBI's.  NJC put up 17 hits and struck out 7 times.

(Game Recap 2/14) Plainswomen vs. Seward County CC = Won 4-0

Breakdown: Tight battle until Northeastern broke through the scoring barrier in the 5th inning puttin up 3.  In the 6th, they followed up with another run.  Sara Lynch pitched a complete game as she shut down Seward County CC with 5 strikeouts and only giving up 4 hits.  Rylyn Nelson and Addy Deal combined for the 4 RBI's the Plainswomen scored.  NJC recorded 8 hits total with only 1 strikeout and drew 3 walks.  Brooke Rule was able to steal a base in the contest.
