Rylyn Nelson Earns NJCAA D1 Softball Player of the Week

Sterling, Colo...

For the first time in Northeastern Junior College athletic history, a softball player has earned the crown for NJCAA D1 Softball Player of the Week!  And that award was given to Sterling native and sophomore 2nd baseman Rylyn Nelson.  Rylyn had a monster week as she hit .571, blasted 9 homeruns (including 3 straight multi-homer games), knocked in 15 RBI's and helped lead the Plainswomen to six wins during that stretch.  Northeastern is also in 1st place in Region IX.

Nelson's last homerun also tied the Northeastern softball program homerun record at 35.  It would be a great feat for her to set a new record and complete this legacy she is creating at Northeastern.  Overall this season, Rylyn has a batting average of .409, has smacked 16 homeruns and knocked in 42 RBI's.  She has scored 40 times, has an on-base percentage of .500 and a huge slugging percentage of 1.022.  In her 38 hits this season, she has been walked 14 times and has 9 doubles.  On the defensive side of the ball, she has an outstanding .938 fielding percentage with only 6 errors on the season, a very good number considering the position she plays.

Congrats to Rylyn and her team on this great accomplishment.  Northeastern is set to play a 4-game series this coming weekend against Lamar Community College.  The Plainswomen will also be starting a 10-game home stand playing various teams in the Region.  Good luck to Rylyn and the other Plainswomen.
