NJC Softball Beats Trinidad, Will Host Region 9 Post Season Tournament

NJC Softball beat the Trinidad State College Trojans this past weekend to be crowned the Region 9 regular season champions, which gives them the opportunity to play at home for the post season tournament.  Games for the Region 9 tournament will start at 8am on Thursday (5/4) morning and will conclude either Saturday or Sunday.  At 3:30pm, the Plainswomen will play the winner of Otero College and Luna Community College who will battle earlier in the day.  All games of the tournament will be played at Mason Field near Pioneer Park.  There will also be a "Championship BBQ" starting at 1pm on Thursday to get the winning atmosphere going for NJC.  Come out and support the Plainswomen who look to win their first ever Region 9 Championship for softball in school history.

Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 7-0 loss to Trinidad State College on Saturday. Trinidad State College scored on a double by #4 in the first inning, a walk by #23 in the first inning, a single by #7 in the first inning, and a home run by #4 in the second inning. The Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Trinidad State College, giving up seven runs. Trinidad State College fired up the offense in the first inning, when #4 doubled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run. A single by Addy Deal in the fifth inning was a positive for Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen#13 was the winning pitcher for Trinidad State College. The pitcher lasted seven innings, allowing three hits and zero runs while striking out nine and walking one. Delaney Barrett took the loss for Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen. The pitcher lasted six innings, allowing ten hits and seven runs while striking out three. DealEden McNally, and Lauren Lee each collected one hit to lead Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen.

It came down to the wire on Saturday, with Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen taking victory on a dramatic walk-off double in the late innings that sealed their victory over Trinidad State College. The game was tied at five with Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen batting in the bottom of the seventh when Desiree Perales doubled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run. Despite falling down by four runs in the fifth inning, Trinidad State College tried to fight back. Trinidad State College scored five runs in the failed comeback on a double by #1 in the sixth, a single by #5 in the sixth, a sacrifice fly by #13 in the sixth, a single by #18 in the seventh, and a single by #23 in the seventh. Northeastern Junior College Plainswoman Varsity opened up scoring in the first inning, when Addy Deal singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.

Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 16-3 loss to Trinidad State College on Sunday. Trinidad State College scored on a home run by #11, a home run by #4, and a home run by #13 in the first inning. The Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Trinidad State College, giving up 16 runs. Trinidad State College got on the board in the first inning. #11 hit a solo homer. Trinidad State College scored ten runs in the fourth inning. #4#13#23#12#8, and #4 all drove in runs in the frame. #13 was credited with the victory for Trinidad State College. The pitcher allowed 17 hits and 16 runs over five innings, striking out two. Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen tallied one home run on the day. Ayva McComas put one out in the first inning. Angelina Quezada led Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen with two hits in two at bats. Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. McComas had the most chances in the field with four.

Trinidad State College scored three runs in the third inning, but Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen still managed to pull out the victory. The big inning for Trinidad State College came thanks to a single by #23 and a double by #11. In the first inning, Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen  got their offense started when Addy Deal homered on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs. Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen tallied seven runs in the fifth inning. Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen's big inning was driven by singles by McNally and Deal, doubles by Angelina Quezada and Jacquelynn Siefken, and a groundout by Rylyn Nelson.
