Plainswomen Start South Sub-Region With a Victory

Jan. 16, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — The Plainswomen opened up their Region IX South sub-region on Wednesday night. Conference games are the beginning of the road to post season and every game counts. Earlier in the week, head coach Dave Huss commented on how they needed to protect their home court to do well in the region, so this game was step one to accomplishing that goal.

Right away, Northeastern made it aware that they were not going to hold back. The Plainswomen pressured the Lopes from the get go and got easy layups. At the end of the first quarter, Northeastern led 29-15. The second quarter was identical to the first with the ladies keeping the pressure on and forcing Lamar to make mistakes. The Plainswomen capitalized on those mistakes with three-pointers and transition layups. At halftime, Northeastern extended their lead from 14 points to 23 as the scoreboard read 47-24.

After half, the Plainswomen took a little while to get things rolling again. After their slow start however, they continued to keep their lead throughout the quarter. At the end of the third, Northeastern kept their substantial lead with the scoreboard reading 71-46. The game ended with Northeastern staying on top and defeating the Lopes 81-59.

Northeastern will have a much tougher opponent on Friday as they host the Western Nebraska Cougars. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. at the Bank of Colorado Event Center.
