Plainswomen Look to Bounce Back Against North Platte

Jan. 18, 2019, Sterling, Colo. — In their third game of the week, the Northeastern basketball team hosted the Western Nebraska Cougars in yet another Region IX battle. In the Plainswomen's previous game, they edged out the Lamar Lopes to go 1-0 in conference. This game against the Cougars would be their most difficult of the year, so they needed to pull out all the stops.

The start of the game started out rough for the Plainswomen as the Cougars jumped out to a sizable lead. Northeastern committed uncharacteristic turnovers and forced a couple shots. Western Nebraska took advantage of those mistakes, which helped in their 35-14 halftime lead.

When the second half started, the Plainswomen were a completely different team. Unlike the first, they didn't seem timid and played with more composure, which allowed them to go on a 10-2 run in the first three minutes. Throughout the rest of the quarter, Northeastern played steady and continued playing Plainswomen basketball. When the horn buzzed to end the third, the deficit was reduced to single digits with Northeastern trailing 52-43. The final quarter was anyone's game, and if the Plainswomen kept playing their game, they could overcome the nine points they trailed. Northeastern showed glimpses of their third quarter play, but ultimately couldn't put the ball in the basket. The ladies eventually fell to the Cougars 72-59 and sit 1-1 in conference play.

The Plainswomen will be back at home on Tuesday, Jan. 22 with tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
