Plainswomen Fall In Region Final Game

Plainswomen Fall In Region Final Game

The Plainswomen volleyball team went into the Region IX South tournament as the number one ranked seed, which was earned by having a stellar season.  Being the one seed allowed them to have a bye and play the winner from the day before.  Having the extra day rest helped the Plainswomen have a great tournament, but it didn't end the way they wanted it to.

The first game in the tournament would be against McCook CC, who they had previously defeated twice in the regular season.  This game shaped up to be the same thing as they defeated them in three sets.  By winning that game, the Plainswomen would advance to play against Western Nebraska, who has proven to be a tough team to beat.  The Plainswomen however had beaten them twice before in the year, but they knew that post season play is a time when teams don't hold back.  With that being said, the Cougars would come out and defeat Northeastern in three.

With that loss, the Plainswomen would have to work themselves back up through the losing side of the bracket, which really only meant that if they made it to the championship game, they had to win twice to be able to be called champs. In their first game of the second day, the ladies played Lamar, who they were more than capable of defeating.  With their season on the line, the Plainswomen played extremely well and defeated the Lopers in three.  That win advanced them to the championship game against Western Nebraska.  With the season on the line once again, the Plainswomen knew that they needed to come out and play their game to get the victory and force the second championship game.

The first set Northeastern was able to play well and get the win with a score of 26-24.  The ladies knew they needed to get a good start in order to take down the Cougars, and getting this set helped.  In set two, NJC was able to play great again and win 25-21.  Only one set separated them from forcing game two of the championship round, which would be one game away from the national tournament.  In set three, the Plainswomen couldn't find the spots and lost 25-12.  The fourth set was not the greatest for the ladies either as they lost that set too 25-21.

Set five; championship game.  The Plainswomen needed this to be able to keep their season alive; all they had to do is play their game.  Northeastern battled, but it was not enough as the Cougars defeated them 15-9.

That loss concluded the Plainswomen's season, which was not what anyone wanted.  The Plainswomen had a tremendous year and will be remembered by fans and students forever.  Congratulations ladies on a memorable year.
